If you are pleased with the service at a restaurant, tip the server between 10 and 15 percent. Bartender tips run a couple of rand (R2) for every drink. Car guards, informal or otherwise, generally expect between R3 and R5 for watching your car. The petrol station attendants are underpaid but often ask if they can check your water and oil or wash your windows. If you have the time, allow them to do so, and give them R5. It’s a pittance by foreign standards but goes far for some in South Africa.
Always remember when you travel with a guide (Tour Guide) on your journey through Africa to TIP your guide, unless your were not satisfied with his or her services.
